Colo-Colo advances to the Copa Libertadores quarterfinals after beating River Plate
Colo-Colo secures a 4-3 penalty shootout victory
Chilean club Colo-Colo has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores, after defeating Argentine giants River Plate in a penalty shootout.
The match, which was played in Santiago, Chile, finished 1-1 after extra time. Carlos Palacios scored the opening goal for River Plate in the 26th minute, but Leandro Benegas equalized for Colo-Colo in the 59th minute.
With neither team able to find a winning goal during the remaining 60 minutes, the match went to penalties.
Colo-Colo goalkeeper Brayan Cortes saved two of River Plate's penalties, while all four of Colo-Colo's takers converted their spot-kicks.
The victory is a major upset for Colo-Colo, who are ranked 38th in the CONMEBOL club rankings, while River Plate are ranked first.
It is also the first time that Colo-Colo have reached the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores since 2017.
Colo-Colo will now face Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle in the quarterfinals, with the first leg to be played in Santiago on August 10th.
